A message from Civil Defense Northland
10 Apr 2026

Kia ora Northland

Cyclone Vaianu is expected to bring severe weather to our region, with weather warnings now in place across Northland from Saturday night into Sunday.

Here’s a message from Colin Kitchen, Chair of the Northland Civil Defence Group, with some simple but important advice to help you get ready.

Councils, emergency services, and agencies across the region are preparing, and now’s the time for households and communities to do the same.

A little preparation ahead of time can make a big difference.

Check you’re prepared, secure loose items, and make sure you know what to do if conditions deteriorate.

Decide where you will go if you need to evacuate and make sure everyone in your household knows. Your evacuation place will probably be with friends or family, so make sure they know your plans.

When it is safe to do so, check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.
Find practical preparation advice at getready.govt.nz

Stay safe, look out for one another – we’ll get through this together!
