Play-Based Learning

Learning by Doing: Available for our Years 1–3 Tamariki

At Maromaku School, we know that for our youngest learners, the world is one big classroom. Play-Based Learning isn't just "free time"—it is a purposeful, hands-on way for children to transition from home or kindy into school life. It’s about taking that natural curiosity kids have and turning it into a superpower for learning.

Why we love it at Maromaku:

  • Brain Power: When kids are "playing," they are actually problem-solving, negotiating with friends, and testing out scientific theories (like "How high can I build this before it topples?").
  • Building Independence: It encourages our juniors to take charge of their own ideas. They learn to manage themselves, share gear, and stick at a task until they get it right.
  • Language on the Go: Whether they are setting up a "shop" or building a fort, they are constantly talking, describing, and using new words in a real-world way.
  • Smooth Starts: It makes the school day feel welcoming and less daunting, helping our new entrants find their feet and feel confident from day one.

How it looks in the classroom:

Our teachers carefully set up "invitations to play" that link back to the NZ Curriculum.

  • Maths happens at the water table or with blocks (measuring and counting).
  • Literacy happens when they write a "menu" for their play cafe or a sign for their construction zone.
  • Science happens in the mud kitchen or the garden.

By the time they move into the senior school, our kids have the confidence and the "can-do" attitude they need for more formal projects.
