Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

PB4L: The Maromaku Way – Supporting our Tamariki to Shine

At Maromaku School, we know that great learning happens when kids feel safe, happy, and clear about what’s expected of them. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) is our school-wide "toolbox" for building a culture where everyone treats each other with mana.

Rather than just waiting for things to go wrong and handing out consequences, PB4L is about teaching the right way to behave—just like we teach Maths or Reading.

How PB4L works in our neck of the woods:

  • Teaching the "How-To": We don't just tell kids to "be good." We show them exactly what our values—Whakaute (Respect), Manaaki (Kindness), and Manawanui (Perseverance) —look like in the playground, the classroom, and on the school bus.
  • Catching them being Good: We believe that positive reinforcement is the best motivator. When we see a student showing integrity or helping a mate, we acknowledge it. You might hear about your child earning "Heart of gold" awards or school-wide rewards.
  • A Consistent Approach: Whether a child is in the sandpit or the senior block, the expectations are the same. This consistency helps our tamariki feel secure and understood.
  • Restorative Practice: When mistakes do happen (because that’s part of growing up!), we use a restorative approach. This means we focus on fixing the harm, learning from the moment, and getting back on track together.

Why it matters for our Whānau:

When we have a positive environment, our teachers can spend more time teaching and less time managing "niggles." It creates a school where your child can take risks in their learning without fear, knowing they are supported by a community that cares about their character as much as their academic progress and achievement.
