Project-Based Inquiry

Real-World Learning: Growing Thinkers and Doers in Years 4–8

In the senior years at Maromaku, we move beyond just "finding the answer" and start asking the big questions. Project-Based Inquiry is about taking a real-world problem—often one that affects our own Kawakawa community or our local environment—and giving our tamariki the tools to solve it.

Why we facilitate Project-Based Inquiry at Maromaku:

  • Student-Led: This isn't just a teacher talking at the front of the room. Our students take the lead, choosing how they investigate a topic and how they want to present what they’ve found.
  • Connecting the Dots: Instead of doing "just Science" or "just Writing," an inquiry project weaves them together. A project on our local waterways might involve testing water (Science), writing to the Council (English), and calculating flow rates (Maths).
  • Future-Ready Skills: It builds the "Key Competencies" our kids need for high school and beyond: critical thinking, managing their own time, and working as a team.
  • Community Impact: We love it when projects step outside the classroom. Whether it’s building something for the school grounds or researching local history with our kaumātua, the learning has a real purpose.

The Project-Based Learning Journey:

  • Immerse: We get curious! We explore a topic to see what sparks an interest.
  • Investigate: The "deep dive." Students gather information, interview experts, and get their hands dirty.
  • Create: Taking all that knowledge and building something—a report, a model, a video, or an event.
  • Share: We celebrate the hard work by presenting the "final product" to whānau and the community.

By the time our students head off to high school, they aren't just good at following instructions—they are confident, independent learners who know how to make a difference.
